Writing Assignment 3 Cameras in the Courtroom

Writing Assignment 3 Cameras in the Courtroom

Q Welcome to your third and final writing assignment for CRJ 101. In this assignment, we will consider an important emerging issue: cameras in the courtroom. Although most courtrooms have always been open to the public, telecasting and webcasting of court proceedings are relatively new phenomena. Supporters of cameras in courtrooms argue that they would increase government transparency and be a valuable educational tool for the public. Opponents argue they would interfere with the dignity of a court's proceedings and sensationalize trials (even more than some already are). The attached document summarizes some of the main arguments for and against. You are a policy advisor to a state legislator in a state that is considering passing legislation that would require all of the state's appellate and trial courts to install cameras in their courtrooms and stream court proceedings over the internet. The legislator has asked you to explain both sides of the issue and recommend how they should vote. Your summary and recommendations should be compiled into a paper formatted and submitted as follows: 1) 1.5 spaced, Times New Roman or Arial 12-point font, with one-inch margins 2) Not less than three nor more than five pages, not including any cover pages or works cited lists. Papers with less than three pages will be considered incomplete, and I will not read past the end of the fifth page. 3) You must cite at least two outside sources for this assignment. Our textbook is not an appropriate source. Sources do not have to be scholarly, but must be reputable. If you are unsure whether a source is appropriate, please ask. 4) Absent approval from me in accordance with the policies outlined in the syllabus, late submissions will not be accepted. 5) This assignment is due on Friday, October 12th at 11:59 pm. You will be graded based on three factors: 1) Summary and critical analysis of the arguments for and against this proposal 2) Clarity of and proper support for your recommendation 3) Spelling, grammar, punctuation, and overall presentation.

The decision for the installation of cameras in the courtroom can never be easy regarding the objections which the opposers can bring to the courtroom. This is because there can be objections like too much of sensationalism being projected to showcase the details of the court proceedings via the web media or the broadcasting media. However, there are also supporting arguments which ensure that installation of cameras can be necessary and useful for the courtrooms and for the judges to review cases in the future.
